Norway Aims for More Arctic Oil Drilling by 2017
OSLO--Norway's government said 26 oil companies had applied for drilling licenses in the country's 23rd concession round, which includes a previously unexplored Arctic frontier area at the border with Russia, and drilling could start in 2017.
The government had offered 57 license blocks in January; 34 of them in an area in the southeastern Barents Sea that was previously disputed with Russia; 20 blocks in other parts of the Barents Sea; and three blocks in the Norwegian Sea. No license blocks were offered in the mature North Sea.
The applicants in the 23rd round included oil majors such as BP, Royal Dutch Shell, and Statoil; medium-sized companies including Det norske oljeselskap ASA, Dong Energy and Lundin Petroleum AB, and some minor companies.
Awards will be decided in the first half of 2016, the government said.
