High Oil Supplies Won't Survive Sharp Investment Cutbacks
[Dow Jones] Don't underestimate significant risks threatening the world's current high oil supplies, says Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency. Speaking in Beijing, Birol says the combination of a sharp cutback in investment on new oil and gas production--perhaps by more than $100 billion this year--and geopolitical instability in the Middle East and elsewhere could threaten supplies. "The effect of lower investment on oil production will not be delayed forever," he says. "If investment cuts go too deep...we also face the risk of locking in another period of market tightening and higher prices in the future."
