Pressure Builds On US Shale Oil
Sub-$50 oil prices are expected to heap further pressure on U.S. shale oil production, especially as many wells drilled in 2014 are coming to the end of their life spans. The pace of decline from existing wells is now eating into U.S. production as far fewer wells are being drilled given low prices. "Shale oil has proved to be remarkably resilient, but this is coming to an end now as older wells start to decline," says Thomas Pugh, commodities economist from the London-based Capital Economics. U.S. oil production is expected to drop to 8.7 million barrels a day (b/d) from current levels of just over 9 million b/d by the end of 2015.
