Russia Says Companies Commit to Oil Output Cut but Keeps Forecast for Higher Production
By Laura Mills
MOSCOW--Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Wednesday that representatives from 12 companies that produce about 90% of the country's oil have pledged to uphold a production cut, according to Interfax news agency.
"They will lower (output) proportionally to production volume," he said.
On Saturday, Russia agreed to cut up to 300,000 barrels per day of production next year, joining the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting countries in reducing output. Russia has committed to cuts in the past but has often failed to implement them, ramping up output instead.
Mr. Novak said the ministry would meet twice a month with oil companies to monitor implementation of the deal. He said the cut would be put in place by the end of the first quarter.
However, Mr. Novak said that the ministry did not plan to change its current forecast that output would rise to 548 to 551 million tons in 2017.
