Russian Oil Companies Ready to Consider Freeze Proposals
By Olga Razumovskaya
MOSCOW--Russian oil companies are ready to consider proposals for a potential oil freeze or even oil cuts, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Tuesday in Istanbul.
The comments came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin voiced his support for curbs on petroleum output, a move that sent oil prices rising.
Mr. Putin said Russia, which pumps more crude oil than any other country, believes that "freezing or even reducing oil production is the only way to save the stability of the energy sector."
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, a 14-nation cartel that doesn't include Russia, agreed last week to a cut in its collective output of 1% to 2%.
Also Tuesday, the deputy chief executive of Russia's second-largest oil producer PAO Lukoil (LKOH.MZ), Leonid Fedun, said that oil output freeze in Russia should last for at least a year, Interfax news agency reported.
He said that Lukoil expects its company to produce the same level of oil this year as it produced in 2015 and increase output again in 2017-2018.
