Marathon Oil Corp.'s third-quarter profit fell 24% as the company recorded a drop in revenue and sales volume.

The Houston company has been selling assets and increasing capital spending to boost output and improve profitability. In June, Marathon said it was selling its Norwegian business for more than $2 billion in cash as it seeks to re-focus operations on the U.S. The company, however, abandoned plans to sell its U.K. North Sea business after bids came in too low.

Excluding Lybia, total sales volume from continuing operations rose 2% in the latest period, while net production available for sale fell 1%.

Exploration expenses fell 34% from the year-earier period.

Overall, Marathon Oil reported a profit of $431 million, or 64 cents a share, down from $569 million, or 80 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 5% to $2.97 billion.
