Libya, Nigeria Give Another Push to OPEC Oil Production
OPEC's crude production rose by about 150,000 barrels a day in September, says Vienna-based consultancy JBC Energy, despite the cartel's pledges to cut output tight in order to rebalance markets. The two OPEC countries exempted by production curbs, Libya and Nigeria, respectively pumped an extra 85,000 barrels a day and 50,000 barrels a day. Some of the cartel's allies in the production caps, notably Russia and Kazakhstan, have become increasingly vocal against the exemption, saying it's offsetting their own efforts to turn off the spigots. Production from members of the Vienna-based organisation subject to caps is also rising with Saudi Arabia increasing production by 50,000 barrels a day, according to JBC. Overall compliance to OPEC cuts also fell by one percentage point to 98% last month, the consultancy says.
