Shell Proposes Including Russian Oil in Brent Benchmark
Royal Dutch Shell proposes a shakeup of the brent crude oil price benchmark including the addition of Russian urals in the price setting process which is currently based on four different grades of North Sea oil. Speaking at the S&P Platts Global Crude Summit, Mike Muller, vice president of crude-oil trading at Shell says "The market is currently functioning well," but changes need to be made soon, including widening the grades of oil used to inform the price. The S&P Platts benchmark underpins the ICE futures contract which the majority of the world's oil is priced off.
"If you had to pick one grade of crude, urals is the one which North West European refineries should be designed to run optimally," says Mr. Muller, adding that the average refinery diet in the region is skewed towards North Sea and urals so the benchmark should reflect that. "
