Saudi Growth Expected to Slide as Oil Revenues Decline
By Ahmed Al Omran
RIYADH-Saudi Arabia's gross domestic product is expected to grow 1.8% in 2016, down from 3.5% the previous year, its central bank said, as the kingdom continues to grapple with declining revenues due to low oil prices.
In its annual report released Monday, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency, as the central bank is known, said the country is projected to record a deficit of 9.4% of GDP.
"Economic growth was affected by the oil market situation, developments in the global economy and the general atmosphere in the region," said Ahmed al-Kholifey, governor of the central bank, before he presented the report to King Salman, according to the country's state news agency.
"Therefore the kingdom's economic growth in the first half of this year increased by 1.5% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year," he added.
The Saudi economy derives 72% of its revenue from oil exports, SAMA said, but it has been hit hard by the sharp drop in energy prices since the middle of 2014.
