Global Oil Glut "Biggest Threat" To Oil Market
A global oil glut is the biggest threat to the oil market, a top Iranian oil official said Wednesday. The remarks come after Riyadh severed diplomatic relations with Tehran after a crowd protesting against the execution of Saudi cleric ransacked the Kingdom's embassy. Speaking to Iran's oil ministry agency Shana, Mehdi Asali, who heads the department of OPEC affairs at the ministry, said tensions between "Iran and Saudi Arabia is a political issue that will impact the oil market in the short term," but said oil oversupply is the "biggest threat." He said the tensions were magnified by a current glut in oil markets of up to 2 million barrels a day, as Iran prepares to ramp up production by 500,000 barrels a day when sanctions are lifted in the coming weeks.
