Evonik to partner or divest performance materials business

Evonik Industries has confirmed that it is looking to strengthen its performance materials business, which includes acrylic monomers and polymers, with options that could include forming partnerships or selling the business. The company tells CW that it is exploring opportunities to strengthen technology platforms of this product-oriented, raw material– and energy-intensive operation. Evonik says it is focusing on improving its competitive position and “examining options for growth—for example in the form of cooperation models.”
In 2014, performance materials recorded sales of €3.83 billion ($4.38 billion), accounting for close to 30% of Evonik's sales. It had Ebitda of €325 million and profit margin of 8.5%, the lowest of Evonik's three chemical business segments. Performance intermediates accounted for close to 45% of sales, acrylic monomers and polymers 20% each, pesticides 5% and others 10%.
