DJ Oil Prices Fall on More U.S. Drilling
By Georgi Kantchev And Nicole Friedman
NEW YORK--Oil prices fell to a new multi-month low Friday as drilling data confirmed the resilience of robust U.S. production.
U.S. prices slid Thursday to more than 20% below their recent June highs, meeting a common definition of a bear market, and continued their slide Friday. Oil rallied earlier this year on expectations that cuts in drilling activity and investment would rebalance the market, but fell back in recent weeks as the global oversupply of crude showed few signs of abating.
The number of rigs drilling for oil in the U.S. rose by 21 to 659 this week, oilfield-services firm Baker Hughes Inc. said Friday. Though the rig count is down by 903 from a year ago, U.S. production has held steady near multi-decade highs.
The U.S. benchmark settled down 31 cents, or 0.6%, to $48.14 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest settlement since March 31. Prices fell 6% this week.
Brent, the global benchmark, fell 65 cents, or 1.2%, to $54.62 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe, the lowest settlement since March 19. The contract fell 4.3% on the week.
