Oil Prices Retreat as China Imports Soften
By Nicole Friedman
NEW YORK--Oil prices fell Monday on concerns about robust U.S. production and weaker Chinese demand.
Light, sweet crude for July delivery settled down 99 cents, or 1.7%, at $58.14 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent, the global benchmark, fell 62 cents, or 1%, to $62.69 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration recently revised production data for earlier this year to show that output was higher in January and February than previously reported. Based on those revisions, some market watchers expect the agency to raise its estimates for future U.S. production when it releases its monthly supply-and-demand report Tuesday.
China's crude-oil imports fell 11% in May from the prior year, according to data released Monday. Strong Chinese oil demand has been one of the few pillars of oil support so far this year, and signs of softening demand could weigh on oil prices.
