Western Sanctions Accelerate Russia's Energy Exports to Asia
[Dow Jones] Intensifying western sanctions against Russia would accelerate Russia's oil and natural gas exports to Asia, says Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp. in a note. "Russia's relationship with the West deteriorated since the Malaysian air plane crash in July. Japan will have to stay with its allies," but "it is unlikely that Russia chooses to depend only on China," it says, emphasizing Japan's role as a counter balance to China in Russia's customer base. But not everyone is optimistic.
Mizuho Research Institute expects significant delays in new oil and gas projects due to the lack of funding from Western banks and advanced technologies necessary for Arctic resource development, which would inevitably affect future supply for Japan. Russia is the fourth largest liquefied natural gas exporter for Japan, accounting for 10% of its annual demand.
