DJ Oil Rises on Signs Major Oil Producers Will Stick to Cuts
By Alison Sider and Sarah McFarlane
Oil prices rose Friday amid signals that major oil producers will stick to their agreement to cut production next year and the dollar's rally slowed.
U.S. crude futures gained $1, or 1.96%, to settle at $51.90 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, gained $1.19, or 2,2%, to $55.21 a barrel on London's ICE Futures exchange.
Also Friday, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said all Russian oil companies, including Rosneft, have agreed to cut production in accordance with the agreement Russia struck with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and other major producers, according to media reports. OPEC members, including Kuwait, have notified customers that cuts are coming.
The agreed cuts by oil producers are expected to be implemented from January.
"Every country is already taking steps to do what they say they are going to do which, by my estimation, will put oil in a global supply deficit early next year," Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at the Price Futures Group, wrote in a client note.
