Iran Oil Min Hopes Algiers Paves Way for Oil Deal
By Benoit Faucon
ALGIERS, Algeria--Iran on Tuesday vowed to keep boosting production, potentially jeopardizing crucial OPEC talks looking to freeze output this week.
Members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries are set to debate a production cap on the side of an energy summit here Wednesday as they seek to bolster flagging oil prices.
But speaking to reporters ahead of the conference, Iran's Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said, "we won't freeze until we reach 4 million barrelsa day and then we will see."
The level corresponds to what Iran sees as its market share before crippling sanctions hit its oil industry in 2010.
Regional geo-political rival Saudi Arabia insists it won't cap output unless Iran curbs its own production to its August levels of 3.6 million barrels a day.
Still, Mr Zanganeh said, "I hope we can cook something" to pave the way for a future deal at the Algiers meeting.
