Oil Prices Rise, Rebounding From Two-Month Low
By Timothy Puko
Crude oil prices rose after new data showed U.S. refiners running their operations far harder than expected, thwarting expectations that a glut of fuel products would start to damp refiners' demand for crude.
Refiners ran nearly one percentage point harder than they had the week before, an increase in capacity that was nearly five times what analysts had expected, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It also showed a slight decline in oil production from the Lower 48 states, and a surprising fall in stocks of distillates, including diesel, fueling crude's rally.
U.S. crude for August delivery gained 29 cents, or 0.6%, to $44.94 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The August contract expired at settlement, and the more actively traded September contract gained 30 cents, or 0.7%, to $45.75 a barrel. Brent, the global benchmark, gained 51 cents, or 1.1%, to $47.17 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe.
