Exxon Sticks With North American Chemical Plants
Volatile commodity prices might have some petrochemical manufacturers reconsidering their ambitious plans to build plants in North America. But not Exxon Mobil (XOM), says Neil Chapman, CEO of ExxonMobil Chemical. Falling crude prices have reduced the cost advantage of plants being built in North America to take advantage of cheap natural gas. "Will producers in North America start to rethink their investments? If they were banking on the advantage of 2013 to 2014 lasting for the long term, maybe they will," Chapman says, speaking at the IHS World Petrochemical Conference in Houston. "But for Exxon Mobil, nothing's changed." The company says the ethane cracker it is building in Texas will be resilient over a wide range of commodity price scenarios.
