Big Oil Companies to Cut Spending, Shrink Production
Big, publicly traded oil companies, from Exxon Mobil (XOM) to state-owned giants like Petrochina, will likely cut capital spending if oil prices remain around $50 a barrel, analysts at Tudor, Pickering, Holt say. Such companies account for more than a third of global oil output, TPH estimates, and lower spending will impact production. "The business model, even for the well capitalized, isn't sustainable in this commodity price world," the analysts note. "Something has to give."
