U.S. Oil Market Still Overstocked Despite Recent Stockpile Drop: Citi
[Dow Jones] While last week's drop in U.S. crude stockpile is lending support to the oil prices, the overall petroleum numbers do not, says Tim Evans, an energy analyst at Citi Futures. For example, U.S. total petroleum inventories netted to an 8.5 million barrels build last week while total product shipments dropped 1.23 million barrels. "Although the weak demand was likely a function of the Labor Day holiday, we note that the four-week average dropped 714,000 barrels per day last week to 19.5 million barrel per day, trimming the year-on-year growth to 132,500 barrels per day," he says. The build in stocks coupled with the decline in four-week average means stocks cover 66.7 days of supply, an increase of 7.9 days more than a year ago, he points out. "The market may have been able to rally in spite of this data, but the U.S. market looks more overstocked than a week ago, not less," he adds.
