G7 Leaders commit to 40-70% GHG reductions by 2050

Leaders of seven of the world’s largest economies, at the G7 meeting in Elmau, Germany, yesterday, expressed support for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40-70% by 2050. The leaders emphasized that “deep cuts in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are required with decarbonization of the global economy over the course of this century.”
The politicians affirmed their “strong determination” to adopt an appropriate agreement at the climate change conference in December in Paris this year. “We support sharing with all parties to the UNFCCC [United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change] the upper end of the latest IPCC [international panel on climate change] recommendation of 40–70% GHG reductions by 2050 compared with 2010,” they said in a statement. “We also commit to develop long-term national low-carbon strategies.”
