India Earmarks $791 Million to Build Oil Reserves
[Dow Jones] India has earmarked 49.48 billion rupees ($791.2 million) to fill its crude oil storage facilities in southern India as part of a broader plan to build strategic reserves to cushion the economy against supply disruptions. India imports about 80% of its energy needs, leaving its economy vulnerable to problems such as high inflation and subsidies driven by a rise in global oil prices. However, the sharp fall in the fuel's price since June has given it an opportunity to prepare for any future shocks. The first storage facility to be filled is in Vishakhapatnam. Two more storage facilities in Mangalore and Padur will be completed by October. The three facilities can store a combined 5.33 million tons of oil.
